I know I like to be healthy and to look good, but there is a point I will not cross. I see all these women that will literally starve themselves in order to stay skinny ( and most the time they are too skinny as is). Why do women do this? It is becoming and epidemic and girls are starting at a younger age. There is an 11 yr old little girl that we used to live by, and she refused to eat any lunch at school because she didn't want "boys to see her eating and think she was a pig". I was floored when her mom told me this. She also never ate any dinner unless it was a salad. This kid looked like she had not eaten in months. Her face was pale and her eyes were sunken, and the mom summed it all up to a "growing phase". Why is there so much pressure on females to be rail thin, and why do so many fall into that trap?

There is so much pressure put on women to be skinny. As long as we idolize actresses and models who are rail thin, this will be the case. When I was younger, I had men tell me I would be gorgeous if I lost weight. What I didn't realize then is that I was already gorgeous. I fell into the starvation pattern for awhile too, but no more. I wish all women would realize the freedom that comes with loving your body for what it is and realizing you were not put on earth just for someone else to look at.

I 100% agree with you. I hear so many women say that when they lose 20 pounds they can really start living, or when they lose weight life will be much better, etc. I wish everyone woman could just live fully in the moment of "right now".

While psychologists and dietitians might offer more complex theories, I think it was the impact of one British supermodel in the 1960s that really triggered off the "skeletal look is sexy" trend. Before Twiggy Lawson was famous, models were more or less well-balanced weight-wise. Then "Twiggy" became the IT girl of the moment, and it just snowballed. Playboy centerfolds, too, have gotten thinner and less feminine looking.

Almost unbelievable that one thin girl would snowball so many nations into thinking "thin was it". Don't get me wrong, I think it is great to be fit and trim, but not if it is going to compromise my health.

Amazing, but true. I was just a tiny child back then, but Twiggy came along at a time when TV and mags such as Cosmopolitan and all those jet set models became trendy. For more on Twiggy, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiggy

Well, Ms. Twiggy is not so twiggy anymore. She is a nice healthy weight and looks great. I think times are changing more where it is becoming okay to be healthy looking again. Thanks to famous people like Oprah, Beyonce Knowles, Queen Latifah, etc. There will always be the rail thin girl, but hopefully women will start to become more satisfied with a healthy figure (be it skinny, heavy or in between) verses a skinny figure.

Now, in 2007, yes, Twiggy Lawson looks more, shall we say, womanly. I think the notion of thin-is-in is a rather new trend that reaches back only about 80 years or so. Historically, women in Western culture tended to be, um, well-rounded. I think that women need to remember that extremes on both ends of the scale are bad, bad, bad.

I can't believe I've never even heard of this woman. I think I will look up her past and present pics to see if I recognize her.

I wish women would not be this way and I see so many women younger and older (much more younger though) that feel that they have to be attractive in a man's eyes before they can feel attractive for themselves. So many wonder what a guy will think about them and will take pains to change themselves if a man says they are too heavy, wear too much make-up, dress too conservatively etc. I am the total opposite. I feel a guy should impress ME. If he doesn't like the way I look or dress, then I give that about as much thought as I do to breathing or blinking. You are absolutely right when you say freedom comes from loving who you are. Who cares if some shallow guy wants you to lose weight ? He will probably have a receding hairline in a few years and a beer belly anyways. If not, then why would anyone want to be with a man who tries to change them ? If you want to change something about yourselves, do it for you, not for some man. There are millions of men out there, and if one doesn't accept how you are now, then move on to the next.

Body image is not only for girls who are trying to lose weight and trying to gain weight. We can't blame those who starve themselves. It is also a sickness. Some are suffering from anorexia and bulimia nervosa. These two are some eating disorders which people can not control. If you have any of these, you could try to consult a psychologist/psychiatrist because these are controlled by our thoughts.
